Speech phobia and even the thought of speaking in public can make you anxious. Maybe you were laughed at, got embarrassed, or felt like you didn’t do well. Whatever the case may be, that bad experience may have left a lasting, subconscious impression on you.I remember working client a few years ago who worked for a massive firm in the City of London. He had to speak in public for his work once or twice a month and would lose sleep over it in the nights leading up to it. He felt that his lack of confidence with public speaking was undermining his leadership skills. The physical symptoms of anxiety were so strong that he was afraid that other people would notice he was anxious.Negative experiences of presentations in the pastIn a hypnotherapy session, we got to the root of where his fear came from. As a child of 8 or 9, he’d been humiliated by his teacher in front of his classmates when he pronounced a word wrong. This was a traumatic experience for him, and his unconscious mind has logged that public speaking was dangerous and should be avoided.Did you have an experience in the past that has led to a fear of public speaking? A hypnotherapy session can help you discover what that might be and help you shift your perspective on what happened and let it go.My client realised that this experience was not his fault, that the teacher had been unkind and unprofessional, and he was able to let it go and speak in public with greater ease and calmness. It’s important to remember that one bad experience does not mean that you’re doomed to fail every time you try public speaking. We can let go of the past and learn to overcome a public speaking fear.3. You have an underlying social anxiety disorder. The third reason for may be that you have an underlying social anxiety disorder. If you’re anything like I used to be, I would get nervous in social situations and was prone to worrying about every little thing. I had a fear of conversation let alone getting up to speak to a group. This public speaking fear was just another fear on a long list!If you suffer from anxiety, you may find that public speaking is particularly difficult. However, treatments can help you manage your anxiety and make speaking easier for you.Seek help for social phobiaConsider how you can treat your anxiety disorders generally – do you need therapy or speak to your doctor? Do you need more sleep and more time to relax and switch off? Do you need to get treatment specifically for social anxiety? For me, hypnotherapy was beneficial for calming
