Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from this link: 2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.4. If your printer is not in the list, turn it off and on and then click Retry.5. If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.6. If the screen displays prompting to turn on printer updates, click Yes and continue.7. Whenever I attempt to print I receive a"Printer Offline" message and the print job terminates. The printer is actually on-line and works fine from another PC. I can also print by e-mail. This problem appeared for the first time suddenly today. I have since updated to Windows 10 v1607 and it looks like this has corrected the problem. So this looks like more of an OS or PC issue rather then a problem with the printer per se. Tried all the on-line help but the scanner just wouldn't work. The 'Scan a Document or Photo' button on the HP Printer Assistant didn't work and the printer would not scan from the menu on it's own interface.Tried everything and all the HP doctor stuff. Took 4 hours yesterday and 4 hrs again today.See the first post Scanning/Faxing and Copying section about Windows 11 problems. The guidance from HP was to pull the power cable with the printer still on. Then press and hold power button to fully clear any stored energy in the system. Pulled the power cable, waited 2-3 mins, pressed Power button for a minute and plugged the printer direct to the wall outlet (it was in an extension). Reinstalled the basic driver software from Print/Scan Doctor and ... it works. Just printed and scanned ok. Couldn't get Smart Scan app to work though. It installs but won't boot. The start screen comes on for a few seconds then just goes off again. So now have 'HP Envy 5540 series : HP Printer Assistant' working.
