I installed Internet Explorer 8 since the last time I tried to write a CD, and I've heard talk of compatibility problems with Sonic DLA (preinstalled on my machine), so that might be the problem. The symptom: I insert a new, blank CD in the drive, a dialog box pops up telling me that DLA must format the CD, I say OK, it formats the CD, and just as it finishes, the machine crashes with a blue screen saying something about BAD POOL. When the machine comes back up, a window pops up from Microsoft saying, in effect, that they looked at the crash dump and don't know what the problem is, but it's probably related to antivirus stoftware.I tried disabling DLA in startup, by running msiconfig and disabling DLACTRLW in the startup tab, and the result is that I cannot access the drive at all.So... my question is this: If I simply uninstall DLA entirely, will that enable the native Microsoft drive-writing facilities? If not, do you have any suggestions? My experience with Sonic DLA under XP has taught me that this piece of software is buggy, so in general there is no guarantee that something won´t went wrong if you uninstall DLA. I don't believe there is any direct fix for compatibility between Sonic DLA and Roxio DirectCD or Roxio Drag-to-Disk, and you can probably imagine the limited options available if you have existing CD-RW disks in a udf format that is not compatible with your current udf software. Switch to compatible software permanently, or switch temporarily to recover the data and then create new CDs using Sonic DLA, if you wish to retain the convenience of using udf packet writing to a CD-RW disk. You may try disabling or uninstalling Sonic DLA and see if XP can read the CDs using it's own built-in capabilities. XP SP1 and later may be able to read disks created using recent versions of Roxio's udf format. If so, you may save the data to the hard drive and subsequently create new CDs using the Sonic DLA udf format. If XP cannot natively read the CDs, you may need to install Roxio DirectCD or Drag-to-Disk or another compatible program such as ISOBuster, at least temporarily, and decide whether to stick with that or save the data to the hard drive, uninstall Roxio DirectCD or ISOBuster, and then use Sonic DLA to create new CDs.
